For 2021, BMW has updated its three key GS adventure bike models, the learner-approved G 310 GS, the middleweight F 750 GS/F 850 GS, as well as the range-topping R 1250 GS. Distinguishing the new models is a number of standard equipment upgrades, aiding in both comfort and performance, as well as a new colour scheme to mark the GS nameplate’s 40th anniversary. This ’40 Years GS’ edition, which features a yellow, black and silver livery that is inspired by the late-80’s R 100 GS Bumblebee’ colour scheme, will first appear on the F 750 GS and F 850 GS in November. BMW R 1250 GS 2021 An enhanced rider assistance suite sees the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GSA gain Dynamic Traction Control as standard, as well as a new Eco’ rider mode to encourage efficient riding. This technology helps deliver linear acceleration, while also improving fuel consumption and emissions. The BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 GSA come standard in light white and ice grey paint, while the triple black, Rallye and 40 Years GS colourways are available optionally. BMW G 310 GS 2021 While the BMW G 310 GS retains its 25kW/28Nm single-cylinder engine, the throttle response has been improved and a new automatic idle speed has been implemented to avoid stalling. The entry-level, LAMS-approved adventure bike also gains a self-boosting anti-hopping clutch, and the clutch and brake levers are now adjustable in four stages. For 2021, the G 310 GS also gains a full LED headlight as well as LED indicators and a daytime running light. Styling changes include metallic titanium grey paint accents as standard, and Rallye and 40 Years GS edition colour scheme packages are newly available. A new rider equipment collection commemorating 40 years of GS has also been developed and will be available in Australia next year. BMW F 750 GS, F 850 GS 2021 All F’ adventure bike variants gain new LED indicators, as well as a USB charger near the dash. Significantly, BMW’s ABS Pro and dynamic traction control DCT systems will now come as standard features. The range carries over the 853cc parallel-twin engine, developing 57kW/83Nm in F 750 GS guise, while the uprated F 850 GS and F 850 GS Adventure deliver 70kW/92Nm. The company gave the R 1250 GS and the R 1250 GS Adventure design tweaks and technology borrowed from the car world to celebrate the milestone. Stylists leaned on the R 100 GS which was celebrated as a two-wheeled Range Rover when it made its debut in 1988 as they designed the commemorative, rally-inspired 40 Years GS variant, which receives yellow accents on the wheels, on the seat, on the fuel tank, and on the handlebars. Riders who would rather keep a low profile can order the subtler Triple Black variant, but Light White and Ice Grey remain on the color palette, too. Adaptive LED lighting technology that trickled down from BMW's car-building division joins the list of options. It adds a swiveling headlight that illuminates curves, which makes riding at night safer. Buyers can also pay extra for a heated seat, a selection of different footrests, and a power-adjustable handlebar. These features reflect the fact that BMW's GS bikes are often used on long-distance rides, where comfort is tremendously important. They're the ones you often seen with stickers depicting a third of the world's flags on their side cases. BMW is not making any major mechanical modifications to either bike, so power continues to come from a flat-twin engine that delivers 136 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 105 pound-feet of torque at 6,250 rpm. Both models receive a riding mode named Eco that's also a hand-me-down from the car world, and they come standard with electronic driving aids like Integral ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control, and Hill Start Control Pro. They can't ride themselves — at least not yet — but they help keep riders up in a variety of different conditions. R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure production is scheduled to start in the coming months, but pricing hasn't been announced yet. For context, they currently start at $17,995 and $20,345, respectively. GS milestones Paris-based Citroën celebrated 50 years of its GS, which has four wheels and a hydropneumatic suspension, earlier in 2020. Suzuki's GS-badged motorcycles arrived in 1976 as 1977 models, and Lexus didn't introduce the nameplate until 1993, though the sedan was closely related to the Toyota Aristo that's turning 30 in 2021.
